Interviews | March 26th, 2009

Pavel Ciorici is the founder of WPZOOM, one of the best Wordpress resources blogs. Pavel is 21 years old and lives in Moldova and his first language is Romanian, like mine, but he still run a successful English blog. How is he doing it? Find out in this great interview.

Hi Pavel! Could you tell us what do you do in the online world?

Hi! Currently online represent almost all my leisure, that I turned from a hobby and passion to WordPress into a real “business”, if I can call it that. And this hobby is composed of blogging about WordPress on WPZOOM, and creating websites that are based on this platform. One of the latest project is my first WordPress theme released to the public – Yamidoo Magazine.

When did you have your first touch with Wordpress?

As I remember, in 2005 I created a website for my school, that was the first time  I used WordPress, but I didn’t give too much attention at that time.

Then in 2007 I created a personal blog, and every day I changed it’s theme, until came the time to try to create myself a theme as I wanted. Since then started my passion for WordPress themes, especially “collecting” the greatest ones.

English is your second language, did you have problems because of this?

Actually I think that first problem, is that Romanian is native language for both of us, but because of the fact that we try to do something for the whole world, we are forced to do it in English.

I can’t affirm that I know very well English, but I try to handle it, sometimes even using online dictionaries. After a year of blogging in English, I enjoy very much that I risked to do that in this language, and I’m proud that I can do this for whole WordPress community.

When you started WPZOOM, did you model yourself on anyone?

In fact, I don’t think that when I started WPZOOM anything about me matters, the main idea was the way I write articles. A year ago the only one model I could follow was SmashingMagazine, and I plan to do something similar, just based on WordPress. Last year there weren’t so many websites like SmashingMagazine, and much less about WordPress, but I can mention WPCandy or ThemeLab.com due to which I learned many things.

Can you tell us something about traffic techniques and monetization methods using on WPZOOM?

WPZOOM’s success is due the large flow of traffic that I generated in the period after I launched this blog.

The simplest method used at that time was writing articles about the WordPress that where missing, (i.e. collections of themes, plugins, blog designs, showcases), which deserves to be “shared” further, and so I’ve recieved a high authority on sites social websites like Digg, StumbleUpon or Delicious, sites that could generate about 2,000 visitors in the days when I posted new articles.
At the moment traffic is in a permanent and still growing, even if rarely write.
As for monetization, the main sources of funds is coming from affiliate links, 125px banners selling and sponsored articles.

I read your blog for a while and I find it very useful, how do you come up with fresh ideas?

It’s hard to answer this question. In fact, I never sat on thoughts for a new idea for a new article. Ideas are coming spontaneous to me, and I write them down quickly to not forget to write later article about it when I have free time. I can mention that right now I have more than 5 ideas for new articles, but because I am very busy, I can’t find enough time to finish them.

What advice would you give to a new blogger, like me, trying to join Wordpress resources niche?

The most important thing that I follow is “uniqueness.” I always tried to make something new, different from other blogs, and I hope I succeed. Anything else I cannot recommend, rather than trying to be unique, and realize your own ideas, and a little inspiration is more than welcomed.

What are your plans for 2009?

As I mentioned in an article some time ago, my goals for 2009 are to keep writing interesting articles to build up readership and to improve the community around the blog. Another goal is to create new themes for wordpress, one may be distributed free of my readers.

In that article I also posted a list of several goals that I want to achieve in 2009. But to my joy, these 3 months of 2009 were so successful, since I achieved almost all my purposes.

I can mention that I have right now 2850 readers subscribed to my RSS Feed, and that is not so longer until 3000. I obtained a stable traffic around 2,500 visitors each day. I launched my first WordPress Theme – Yamidoo Magazine, and certainly now I generate more funds than I proposed

Thank you for the interview and for the advice you gave to us. Let’s hope your blog will continue growing up and you’ll help us with great Wordpress resources and great premium themes like Yamidoo in the future too.

Thanks for the interview, and I wish you to have as many subscribers to your blog as you want.
