WP Themes | May 8th, 2009

I’m proud to present my first gift for WPDONE readers. It’s a free Wordpress theme, my first Wordpress theme called “First Theme”.
Coding for Wordpress was a great experience and it was easier thank I supposed to be.
Why First Theme?
I chose the name “First Theme” because it describes perfectly this theme. It’s my First Theme and I didn’t spent a lot of time for the design because I was impatient about the coding, but I promise that I’ll put more efforts in the design of my next theme.
Working at First Theme
After I sketched some layouts on paper I opened Photoshop and I started to design my first Wordpress theme. Along this process I kept in mind the simplicity, because you know that I love it.
Now was the time to code it. I followed some advice found on the Internet and I first coded the PSD layout to xHTML & CSS.
Finally I had a fully functional xHTML & CSS template. I followed some tutorials from the Internet and I started to convert it to a Wordpress theme.
First Theme Features
As you can I see I kept the theme simple and easy to use.

Some of the features that makes this theme unique are:
- About Us Zone (which is present only on homepage)
- Subscribe Buttons
- Article Thumbnails
- Theme Options Page
Theme Options Page
Using Theme Options Page you can configure
- About Us Text
- 468×60 Banner
- Subscribe Buttons

Add your 468×60 banner
To use the banner you need to set the link in Theme Options Page.
You can add your own affiliate banner by uploading a PNG banner into the images folder, located in theme directory, using the name “ads1.png”.
Subscribe Buttons
Using Theme Options Page you can add your RSS and Mail subscriptions link and also your Twitter account address so you can get in touch with your readers easier.
Image Thumbnails
To use post thumbnails you will need to upload a 125×125 px image. Add a custom field called “image” and insert in the value area the 125×125 px image you just uploaded.
Warning: Do not use image with larger resolution.

Other features I want to mention are:
- Wordpress 2.7.1 Compatible
- Widget Ready
- Gravatar Ready
- PSD’s Logo
- Clean Design

So, What’s next?
I’m planning to release a new theme by the end of this month or the start of June. The name of my next theme will be “Simple Perfect”.
After I finish the design I’ll post a screenshot to see it. If you are looking for more free Wordpress themes created by Adrian Bornea continue to visit this blog and I promise that you won’t be disappointed.

May 8th, 2009I recommend you test the theme in IE 6, then you will understand that coding is not as easy as it seems to be

May 8th, 2009how about a zip file. not everyone can open .rar.

May 9th, 2009@Blog design Lab Thanks
@Dumitru Branzan – In IE6 are some problems on transparent files, no coding. I forgot to say that in the description. Also a lot of web designers don’t code anymore for IE6 because they lose valuable time.
@Jenny I’ll upload a .zip archive
Adrian
May 9th, 2009For those who care about IE6 transparency issues you can use this plug-in http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-unitpngfix/

May 9th, 2009@Adrian: the .png transparency bug is also a ‘coding’ problem
As for valuable time… on most of my sites i have about 25% of visitors on IE 6… Now consider that at 1000 uniques a day

May 9th, 2009Hi, there. I like this theme. Is very ok for the first one. Keep it UP
Adrian
May 9th, 2009@Dumitru Brinzan 25% is a big part. I will not use transparency anymore.
First Theme and first bugs, it’s absolutely normal. Please notice me if you find more bugs. Thanks and enjoy my work.

May 27th, 2009Thanks for this simple and great theme,
Please let me know how to add those 4 ad boxes in this theme
Adrian
May 27th, 2009@ballu To add these boxes I use WP125 Plugin, but to make it work you will need to make some changes in CSS
Here is how WP125 Plugin’s CSS should look
——————————————————–
/* Styles for one-column display */
#wp125adwrap_1c { width:260px; }
#wp125adwrap_1c .wp125ad { margin-bottom:10px; }
/* Styles for two-column display */
#wp125adwrap_2c { width:260px; height: 280px; margin-bottom: 20px; padding-top: 20px;}
#wp125adwrap_2c .wp125ad { width:125px; float:left; padding:2px; }
